statue, Grade II* Listed (UK)
This lion statue is made from Coade Stone, a surprisingly weather-proof artificial stone. It originally stood on top of the Lion Brewery, near here next to Hungerford Bridge (an amused Emile Zola wrote of it wishing him a "good morning" in 1893). It was rescued when the brewery was demolished to make way for the Festival of Britain in 1951, for which it formed a part of the site's decorations.
