Last Spike (CPR) | railway, historic landmark

Canada / British Columbia / Sicamous /
 railway, historic landmark

This place, usually just called Craigellachie (after the nearby village) is where the Canadian Pacific Railway's last spike was placed on November 7, 1885.

There is a small tourist cabin, a large version of the famous painting commemorating the event, a cairn with plaques, explanatory placards and a golden-looking spike (probably NOT the actual "last spike" since it was supposed to have been "a plain iron spike").

Craigellachie is often pronounced "Craig-a-LATCH-ee" but its proper pronunciation is "Cra-GAL-a-key."

Across the highway is a beautiful but little-known nature walk. The 1.5 km Gorge Creek loop trail follows the banks of Craigellachie (Gorge) Creek past three picturesque waterfalls--Fir, Cedar and Hemlock.
