The Renaissance castle was built in the marshy land and the only defense elements were trenches and walls that surrounded it. Protection was augmented by the pond and a pair of particularly well-preserved massive towers to the west and a smaller prismatic tower (dungeon) in the south. Till 12th century until 1948 (with the exception of about two hundred years period from the Hussite Wars to the Battle of White Mountain) was the castle with the surrounding estates in the possession of the Prague bishops.
