Facts:
- Tallest building in the historic Lockerbie Square neighborhood, just northeast of downtown.
- This senior citizens' high-rise is named for John J. Barton, mayor of Indianapolis from 1964-1967.
- The two stairways project from the north and south facades, leading down to shoe-shaped projections at ground level.
- At the 15th floor the building's width increases to support larger units on the top 6 floors.
- The fin walls outside the community room on the 15th floor are perforated by doorways which connect the passageways into one long balcony on each side.
- This was the first public housing highrise in Indianapolis, which until then, was one of the largest U.S. cities without highrise public housing at all.
