The Holcomb Estate, or "Woodvale," was originally built in 1926 for James Irving "J. I." Holcomb, a wealthy industrialist and civic promoter of early-20th century Indianapolis. The estate included meadows and gardens inspired by various cultures around the world. It even included boat docks on the White River.

Upon Holcomb's death in 1962, the estate was willed to Butler University (just about a mile upstream from the White River). In 1986, the university sold the property to a private developer. Today, a gated condominium community, aptly named The Holcomb Estate, occupies the land.
