Reservoir Hill, part of a community formerly known as Mount Royal, was developed as an upscale residential community in the last three decades of the 19th century. Early homeowners included wealthy merchants and industrialists. The neighborhood has some of the best examples of Victorian, Italianate and Second Empire style homes in Baltimore. Part of Reservoir Hill is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Baltimore was the second largest port for immigrants coming to the United States and many of these immigrants lived in Reservoir Hill. Reservoir Hill housed many migrants from Eastern Europe and more specifically Russia.

Although restoration efforts have brought new life to portions of the area, many houses are in poor condition.
