railway, train station
The Great Northern Railway's mainline connecting Minneapolis and Seattle was completed in 1893, passing through Newport. The second railway through town was the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, which operated a line running up to Metaline Falls until 1980. The Pend Oreille Valley Railroad is now the only railway in Newport, as it operates the CMSP&P line north to Metaline Falls and the GN line east to Sandpoint.
