Brian Jones was a founding member and guitarist of The Rolling Stones. At around midnight on the night of 2-3 July 1969, Jones was discovered motionless at the bottom of his swimming pool at Cotchford Farm. His girlfriend, Anna Wohlin, is convinced he was alive when they took him out, insisting he still had a pulse. However, by the time the doctors arrived, it was too late, and he was pronounced dead. The coroner's report stated "Death by misadventure," and noted his liver and heart were heavily enlarged by drug and alcohol abuse. Some felt it was suicide, however, blaming Jagger and Richards for his state of mental depression.

  • American singer Jim Morrison died on the same day (3rd of July) 2 years later in Paris, also aged 27.
  • The 15-th cent. farm used to be home to A.A. Milne who's said to have written Winnie the Pooh here. I wonder to whom it belongs now.
