Kelly Grade is the portion of Smoky Mountain Road that abruptly changes elevation by almost one thousand feet from the Kaiparowits Plateau to the flats north of Lake Powell. Kelly Grade involves breathtaking steep switchbacks that are intimidating and provide spectacular views of the badlands at the base of the plateau, Lake Powell and Navajo Mountain. Smoky Mountain Road north of Kelly Grade provides a rough and very scenic route to Escalante, UT. Care should be taken on Kelly Grade at all times and not attempted in bad weather conditions.
