Mental & occasionally medical hospital dating back to 1852. Fell into disrepair & disuse since the backlash against mental health facilities in the 1950's, the last patients in the nearly empty facility were transferred to the east campus in 2002. The west campus is owned by the Federal government, the east campus is owned by the District government. in 2007 the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would move its headquarters to a $4.1 billion facility on the west campus.

  • National Security housed in a building designed as an insane asylum? O, sweet irony!
  • Correction -- according to the DC Preservation League and GSA, most, if not almost all, of the buildings will be used by DHS. At least that's what we were told during a walking tour of the east campus.
