The Riddle Nickel Mine operated until 1987. Although the nickel ore assayed at only 1.5%, low grade compared to ore deposits elsewhere, the federal government considered it a strategic asset and partnered with the Hanna Mining to develop the mine. It was the only nickel mine operating in the United States.
