NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place

It was in this house, the home of Caleb Bentley (who was also the first Brookeville Postmaster), that President James Madison and his staff sought refuge following the British invasion and burning of Washington during the War of 1812. For two days during the British occupation of the capital in 1814, the President conducted the business of the Federal government from the Bentley home.

There is a similar marker, making a similar claim, at the Madison House, about 600 feet up Market Street. Both houses, along with several other buildings of similar vintage, are within the Brookeville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
