 memorial, monument

A memorial to the Collector of Tirunelveli, Mr Ash, who was assassinated in 1907 when his train stopped at the Maniyachi station, en route to Madras. He was shot at point-blank range by the Nationalist Vanchinathan, who then killed himself.
The British government built a memorial for him at Tuticorin in 1913. That memorial is currently in dilapidated condition.
The memorial was built by the philanthropist Cruz Fernandex, in gratitude for Mr Ash's support in bringing about social reforms.
