Building 90 - Saturn V rocket (Houston, Texas)

USA / Texas / Nassau Bay / Houston, Texas / Second Street, 90
NASA, interesting place, missile on display

This is one of the three remaining Saturn V's. The other two are at Cape Kennedy and the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville AL. They were leftover after the last three Apollo moon flights were cancelled.

Saturn V consists of the first stage of SA-514 (Never used for Apollo 18/19), the second stage from SA-515 (Never used as a backup Skylab launch vehicle) and the third stage from SA-513 (Not used in lauch of Skylab - 1973). With stages arriving between 1977 and 1979, this was displayed in the open until its 2005 restoration when a structure was built around it for protection.

Comments

  • They built a building around it to preserve the decaying rocket. You can't see it from the road any more (but you can see some of the other exhibits/rockets). I don't know if it is still free to go visit, but for a long time it was. (You have to pay to visit Space Center Houston across the street.)
  • The refurbishing is done.
  • This was supposed to be Apollo 18, but was never launched.
  • The other two existing Saturn Vs are in Huntsville, AL (US Space & Rocket Center) and at the Kennedy Space Center.
