When Aleksandr III died in 1894 a nationwide subscription was undertaken to build a monument in his honor. The money was raised over a period of years and by 1900 almost two and a half million rubles had been collected for its construction. The original monument, Aleksandr III seated on a pedestal looking out to the Moskva River, was dedicated on the grounds of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on May 30, 1912 almost one hundred years after the French invasion of Moscow.

Following the move of the Soviet government to Moscow, a decree was issued in the summer of 1918 ordering that these statues and all similar structures honoring the tsars and their followers be destroyed.
