The historic Samuel F. Carter Building ("806 Main", colloquially) was originally constructed in 1911 with six additional stories added in 1928. It was known as "Carter's Folly" because it was the largest building to be built at the time (16 stories) and no one thought that bricks could be stacked that high. It was refaced in the 1960s/1970s with white marble. Prior to its closure for rebuilding in 2010 (which gutted the building), the building hosted a Domino's Pizza and a Christian Science Reading Room on street level.

After a few years of a total interior demolition leaving little but the early 20th century floors, it reopened in September 2014 as a hotel, the JW Marriott Houston Downtown.
