Balata is currently the largest refugee camp in the West Bank. About 30,000 people are crowded into 2 sq km, about 30% of whom are not registered. These concrete block houses were constructed in the 1950's to replace tents using the same crowded parcels. The alleyways between these buildings are very narrow.
