In early 1959, according to conventional wisdom, 12 Soviet R-5M (SS-3 Shyster) Nuclear Missiles were stationed at the two German cities of Vogelsang and Fürstenberg (Lychen). These are the 4 Vogelsang Launch Pads; there are 4 additional Launch Pads at Fürstenberg [53°10'3"N 13°16'48.00"E]. The Nuclear Missiles were withdrawn again in August 1959; they were then deployed at Gvardeysk (Kaliningrad).
At the bases in Fürstenberg (Neuthymen) and Lychen (Vogelsang) there is only one Launch Pad, configured for R-5M.
The interesting thing about these launch pads is that they are configured for R-12 (SS-4 Sandal) Nuclear Missiles – a missile with twice the range of the R-5M.
