The curve of Shakespear crescent is all that remains as a reminder of the original reason as to why it curves. There was a link between the London Tilbury and Southend railway line and the North London Line. Known as the "East Ham Loop"it ran around the rear of these houses from 1894 until 1958. The track has long since been lifted and built over, however rumours of a "staff" foot tunnel between East Ham Railway Depot and the housing estate now built on what was once railway land continue to circulate. Such a tunnel would have made perfect sense, but is unlikely to still exist today.

  • Thanks for adding this. Many residents know nothing about it. Many rail links were removed but few people know about those, there are many disused tunnels as well.
  • Go to East Ham District Line Station and you can still see where this loop terminated on the north side of the eastbound platform. I've used the station since the early sixties and I don't remember it not being filled in but it is easily discernible.I guess it was filled in within a few years of closure in 1958.
