Early morning of February 27, 1862 northbound troop train carrying the 7th Mississippi Infantry Regiment collides head on with a southbound lumber train at this point. Twenty-nine soldiers are killed and another seventeen are injured. The 7th Miss. had been ordered to Jackson, TN to join forces gathering under P.G.T. Beauregard (CS) at that point and had departed Bay St. Louis, MS on the 25th. Investigation found that the lumber train was running "off the timetable." In other words, it should have not been on the line at all at that point in time.
