This former Great Northern Railway 1,458-foot long tunnel opened 1913, part of a 37 mile long rail line linking Fairview MT with Watford City ND. It was the only railway tunnel constructed in the State of North Dakota. It remained in use by Burlington Northern Railroad freight trains until the line was abandoned during 1986. Since that time, it has been opened to pedestrian traffic as part of a recreational trail.
