Armenian church is a beautiful religious building that is now considered a monument of architecture. It was constructed in 1885 by the Armenian community of Eupatoria. The church of Saint Nicholas (Surb-Nikogaios in Armenian) is built as a basilica with semicircular apse in the eastern wall. The main difference of this church from other religious buildings is its mixture of architectural styles.

Population of Gezlev consisted mostly of Turks and Tatars. But there were also Greeks, Armenians, Karaites, Jews and Gypsies. Every community had its own quarter centered around a religious building – a church, a kenesa or a synagogue. The current address of Armenian church is Internatsional’naya str. 44; it is in the territory of the Elderly Care House, and in less than 5 minutes you can walk to the dervish monastery. The Armenian quarter used to be there. Since it was outside the city walls it was considered to be in the suburb of Gezlev. Evliya Chelebi (Evliya Celebi), an Ottoman traveler who visited the city in the mid-18th century, wrote that «there is… a quarter of giaour Armenians who have a wonderful cathedral».

Did Chelebi mean this Armenian church that we can still see in Eupatoria? No. This one was founded considerably later, in 1817.
