Holy 40 Martyrs Church is the symbol of medieval Bulgaria during the XII-XIV centuries.
Archaeological research has revealed rich necropolis, filled with pieces of cutlery, seal rings and gold vestments, testimony to the high social status hierarchy, of the people buried there.
It was also discovered the grave of (possibly) Tsar Kaloyan, with his seal ring.
The church is called "of 40 martyrs" to glorify the great victory of the Bulgarians against the emperor of Epirus and Thessalonica, Theodore Komnenos on March 9, 1230 (day of the 40 holy martyrs). After this victory, Bulgaria has become the largest and most powerful country in Southeastern Europe for the subsequent decade.
