Iron Horse Sculpture.
In the fields to the east of Ga. Hwy 15 at this spot, a giant iron sculpture of a horse has stood since 1959. Created by Abbott Pattison, the stylized 10 foot high, two ton horse was originally placed in front of Reed Hall on the University of Georgia campus in nearby Athens, May 25, 1954. However students rioted over placement of the horse after hearing of disparaging remarks by the artist of UGA in general and the students in particular. That night the horse was vandalized in various ways including spray paint, manure and even an attempt to burn it via bonfire. University officials removed the sculpture the next day. In 1959 the iron horse was taken from its storage site in secret and moved to this spot, then owned by L.C. Curtis of the university’s horticulture department, where it has remained to this day.
PLEASE NOTE: Though the sculpture can be plainly seen from Ga. Hwy. 15, it is definitely on private property. Please ask permission from the current owners to see the sculpture up close.
