  • Born and raised in Central Virginia, I am the son of Gabriel Taliaferro (1899-1962). Our 'family' has always preferred to pronounce our name of Taliaferro as it is phonetically written (simply pronouncing all the letters), and closer to that of its Italian origin (Bartolomeo?) Tagliaferro) and not the 'anglicized' and revised pronunciation early immigrants adopted once in England, nor the further bastardized, anglicized version of pronunciation found in 'Tolliver.'
  • As a descendant of Robert Taliaferro, the first Taliaferro to arrive in Virginia in 1647, I pronounce my name just as he did, namely "tol-uh-ver." We know he pronounced his name in this manner because his name is spelled interchangeably "Toliver" and "Taliaferro" in the same 17th Century Virginia deeds. As the name is a Virginia shibboleth known to Southerners for over 350 years, and as the majority of Taliaferros pronounce their name "tol-uh-ver," I've never thought of pronouncing the name otherwise.
