Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building (Washington, D.C.)

USA / District of Columbia / Washington / Washington, D.C. / 17th Street Northwest, 1650
national government / government, administrative building

The Old Executive Office Building was completed in 1888 in the French Second Empire style. Construction took 17 years to complete.

It was the first federal office building designed to be fire-proof. This is one of the reasons why it was the most expensive federal building project built to date.

Upon completion, it was the source of considerable controversy due to the "extravagant" design that was seen as too flashy for the needs of the federal government.

Now it is officially known as the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building. It houses components of the Executive Office of the President, including the Office of Management and Budget, the Vice President and the National Security Council.

Originally it was "The State, War, and Navy Building".
