Kylemore Castle was built by architect James Franklin Fuller for Mitchell Henry, a wealthy doctor from London whose family made a fortune in the textile industry in Manchester.

The castle covers 3,700 m² and has over seventy rooms.. The granite facade measures 43 m in width. The outbuildings include a gothic chapel and a family mausoleum of the Henry family.

The Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the castle and lands in 1920,after they were forced to flee Ypres during World War I. The nuns continued to offer education to Catholic girls, opening an international boarding school. A day school for local girls was also founded in the premises.

The Victorian walled garden situated west is also worth a visit.
