Roundstone Bog

Ireland / Mayo / Westport /
 region, interesting place

Roundstone bog is technically a blanket bog, lying flat across miles of terrain instead of snuggling into a hollow. Unlike scrubby mountain bogs, blanket bog supports grasses, sedges, and heathers. Here, purple moor grass dominates, but its overall color is variegated with ling heather, cross-leaved heath, Mackays heath, Irish heath, St. Dabeoc's heath, bell heather, and silky white tufts of bog-cotton. Today peat is an important local source of fuel. Although machine cutting is now illegal, folks still cut turf by hand; you'll notice stacks of turf bricks left by the roadside to air-dry.
