Charles S. Payson Residence (North Hills, New York)

USA / New York / North Hills / North Hills, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Federal style (architecture)

Estate home designed c. 1924 in the Federal style by Delano & Aldrich and built by E.W. Howell & Co. on originally 110 acres of land for Charles Shipman Payson {capitalist, industrialist}. In addition to marrying Joan Whitney, Payson served as director of Automation Industries, Armco Steel, and Vitro Corp. Formal landscaping was designed in 1927 by Louise Payson with Ellen Biddle Shipman. Payson also had a small yacht named "Saga" built by the Purdy Boat Co.

Upon marrying Joan Whitney, daughter of Payne Whitney who resided at "Greentree", roughly 1/4 of the family's estate was given to them to live on in 1924. Payson inherited ownership of the New York Mets upon his wife Joan's passing in 1975, but sold the team by 1980. He also purchased in the early 1980's "Land's End" in Sands Point with his second wife, Virginia Kraft. His daughter Lorinda married Vincent deRoulet and moved to "Weekend" nearby.

When Payson died in 1985, this 101-acre estate was sold, and Virginia continued to live at 'Land's End'. The property was purchased in 1986 by the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Shelter Rock which adaptively reuses the mansion for administrative offices and meeting rooms.
