NYCHA Goddard-Riverside Towers

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 92nd Street, 74
apartment building, public housing estate, Modern (architecture)

244-foot, 22-story mid-century modern residential building completed in 1965. Designed by William Lescaze & Associates for the New York City Housing Authority, it is clad in tan brick. A 1-story base extends to the north, west, and south, with the slab tower rising above. The residential entrance is at the east end on 92nd Street, in a recessed area lined with blue-painted brick. It has two blue metal doors, the eastern one next to a window of glass blocks. A small, white metal canopy covers the entry. To the west is a blue metal service door, the only other opening in the 1-story base along 92nd Street; the base is capped by a stone coping.

Along the avenue, the base is divided by narrow piers into 14 bays of large 2-over-3 windows. Near the south end of the tower the base has an entrance with metal-framed glass doors to the Goddard Riverside Community Center and Bernie Wohl Center, with a steel canopy. There is a band of red brick along the top of the 1-story base, with a stone coping. The south end has five more bays of windows. The south facade on 91st Street has a brown metal serviced door at the center; to the east, the base is shorter and projects out farther, with three windows with iron grilles. This section is capped by an aluminum coping. Next to the east end is a ramp leading down to the underground parking garage.

The ground floor along the east facade has two windows at the 1-story base on the south end. To the north the tower slab rises straight up from the ground. It has five bays of windows with projecting iron grilles, followed by a blue metal door between glass blocks. Then follows a red metal service door, and then six windows. A horizontal iron band covers most of the ground floor.

The west elevation of the tower has a projecting center section with two bays of double-windows flanked by two bays of single-windows on either side. The north and south ends both have inner bays of double-windows, followed by a single-window bay and two more double-window bays. Within each bay, there are brown-brick spandrels between floors. The north- and south-facing sides of the projecting center section each have a bay of single-windows. The east elevation has two center bays of double-windows, followed on either side by a single-window (without spandrels), another single-window (with spandrels), two double-windows, a single-window (with spandrels), and two double-windows (with spandrels).

The north and south elevations have two bays of single-windows flanking a double-window (none with spandrels).
