"Sefton Manor" (Mill Neck, New York)

USA / New York / Mill Neck / Mill Neck, New York
residence, Tudor (architecture), LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, movie / film / TV location, historic remains

Estate home designed c. 1923 in the Jacobean style by Clinton & Russell on 85 acres of land for Lillian Sefton Thomas Dodge {industrialist}. Dodge served as president of the Harriet Hubbard Ayer Co. cosmetic manufacturing firm which was founded by Vincent Benjamin Thomas, her first husband. The property was originally owned by Frank Clifton Jennings whose home burned down in 1910 so he sold it to Harvey Murdock who in turn sold it to Dodge who had a 34-room country house built in the image of St. Catherine's Court in Somersetshire, England. Dodge commissioned Charles Wellford Leavitt & Sons to design formal gardens, reflecting pools, and three stone temples for the grounds.

The house itself has a 17th century front door, imported mantles, and original intricate stained glass inspired by the works of William Shakespeare. Every door handle in the living quarters was done by famed ironworker Samuel Yellin. Although attributed to the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, the windows were likely by Dodge's second husband Robert Leftwich Dodge who was an artist of paint and stained glass or Charles Connick.

In 1946, the estate was purchased by the Lutheran Church for $216,000 to be used as the Lutheran School for Deaf Children. It is known known as the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf and is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. It is a popular event space and filming location for productions like Pan-Am, Homeland, and Royal Pains S3E13 where Divya visits a supposed antiques dealer and then in S5E10 when Evan has brunch.
