  • The U.S. military left the area in 1996 leaving the Germans to convert the area for civilian use. You can now find the Parkhotel Prinz Carl on the site.
  • I was stationed at Taukkunen Barracks in 1969 and enjoyed my free time in and around Worms. Great beer, wine and food. Watched the Moon landing on a TV in a department store window.
  • I lived here as a child and am trying so hard to find pictures of the barracks before 1996. I loved living here and am said to see that it is no more.
  • I was stationed here 12/25/0 to 3/10/63. On one of my trips I went to Worms to check it out. The barracks were still there, but not occupied. A guy at the back gate said there were no future plans to re-open it. The Hospital across the street by the front entrance had been completely demolished and all the buildings inside the fenced area also demolished...whole area covered by 10 ft. tall weeds. I married a German gal that worked there.....been 48 years together now. Went down town to check out my favorite beer drinking place..the Flat Top. couldn't find it. email me if you want to. Where do you now live? Harry Williams Belen, New Mexico
  • I was stationed here from 09-13-1991 until 12-22-1994. Loved every day I was here. Lived in the barracks on the SW corner of the kaserne...building 5802, 3rd floor, the room just to the left of the bathroom...until I got married and moved to a new house just off post. Interesting to hear that my old barracks has been turned into a hotel. Good memories, good times, great food, and the best BIER you can ever have. I miss it all. T. Dibble Florida
  • I was stationed at USTASCOMEUR at Taukkunen Barricks from about January 1969 to June 71 as part of the DCSSVC (Deputy Chief of Staff Services). I worked in the Commissary Section managing transportation issues for commissory stores throughout Germany, NATO-SHAPE and Italy. Lived in the barracks just to the left of the front entrance for about three months, and they moved to a house "on the economy" with my wife in Heppenheim about 5 miles west of Worms. I really enjoyed being stationed in Worms and in Germany. My job required quite a bit of travel around Germany to various commissaries. Saw a lot of the country and really enjoyed it. One of my favorite places was a pizza restaurant in an old building located a few blocks east and south of the Kaserne. They had the best pizza and we went there quite often. Noticed from the arial pictures that the kaserna was essently empty and abandoned. Always wanted to come back to Worms and see it again, but so far have not made it. Probably won't. Viewing the aerial pictues on Google is probably as close as I will come. Charlie White Scottsdale, Arizona USA. 1/7/10
  • I was stationed in Worms at the time it was decommisioned in 96, in 5th Sig Cmd DCSLOG (Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics) for C&E SATCOM affairs. I recall all the work involved in removing the old furniture , tons of boxes or paperwork, basically emptying the buildings. Worms is a beautyful city, with wonderful surroundings. It left many good memories of long bike rides to Mainz, long 20-25 miles marches in the beautiful countryside while training for Nijmegen, or the annual River water festival where we participated in the Fishermen parade waving and saying "Ahoy" It was sad to see Taukkunen Barracks close down, but it seems a little sad they have not fully utilized the space left behind. Mannheim was nice, but did not have the charm of good Worms. I have been back in Germany several times in the past 3-4 years as a civilian working for a German Company (mostly to Ffm), but will like to take the time to bring my wife and kids one day to show them the charms of Worms and this region.
  • I was stationed in Worms with the 67th AAA gun Btn, Oct 1952 to Oct 1954. The kassern was known then as Focht Kassern. Across the parade ground was the 12th Armored Infantry Btn and 315th Signal Btn. There was considerable war damage at that time that had not been rebuilt. We were only allowed to wear class A uniforms when off post. I know things have changed in Worms but I have several black & white snapshots showing part of the old barracks and surrounding area if anyone is interested.
  • Worms was my first assignment in the Army and I loved it. I worked in the JAG office. I was there from June 1973 to June of 1974. Loved the city, meant some wonderful friends there both German and American. Loved the park across the street, Martin Luther Plaza, ice cream store, great wine, wonderful snitzel and fries, and the train was wight there to go exploring. It is sad to see all our military installations go by the way side. Loved all my time in Germany and want to go back someday.

Our missile assembly unit was part of the 67th Missile Bn. A Battery. I went home in January 1959. I had many friends and often wonder if any are still out there after 50+ years.
  • I was in Worms from Jan 68 through Mar 69 with STRATCOM-EUR working in the com center. Our barricks was the newer building just to the right of the main gate. Loved the city, walked it when I could but never in uniform. The ice cream store was a favorate. The com center was a 24/7 operation and we were on 12 hr shifts.

  • Read the Sept. 8, 2013 story about Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg closing and thought I'd check on Taukkunen Barracks in Worms. This was my first active duty posting as an Infantry Officer with the 1/39 Infantry Regiment. This was a mechanized infantry battalion that was part of the Eighth Infantry Division (Mech.) I was stationed here from late 1964 to mid-1966. Worms was a great duty station. The surrounding area was great for day visits on weekends. Who knows, I might even get back to Worms one of these years.

  • Now that I let underwood know who he is I'd like to comment about worms. Beautiful little city in Germany. Close to the Rhine River and very old bridges and buildings. Gives you the real essence of what Germany is and was. I will be heading there next month to meet that long-lost love of mine for the third time in 60 days. She works and lives in Frankfurt but I insisted on going to worms to take a look at how things may or may not have changed. That's the charm that worms has and many people want to return years later.
  • I was stationed there from 1986-1989. Lived on Von Steuben Strasse, and had my 1st child at the Worms Stadtkrankenhaus in July 1989. He was baptized in the chapel on Taukkunen, which I was told is now a restaurant. I would love to take my family there to see how it has changed. Loved my years there, the fests, parades, wine/beer, food, country and most of the people. Miss the friends we made there, unfortunately only kept in touch with a few, the ones with the largest impact on our lives will always remain in our hearts!
  • I was station from Jan 82 to Dec 84. It was a fun time for me. I liked my 3 foot tall wine bottle that cost 10 marks. I also like drinking out of the boot. I was on the second floor of the Prinz Carl hotel , we were service company at the time over 400 soldiers. I remember one day It was raining cats and dogs and that is when I discovered why they called the town worms. The ground was covered with them. You could of shot a horror film. One female was outside and was so scared she jumped on another soldiers back. I also was lucky I didn't get shot by the german polize. They had standing orders to shot anyone who hopped over the fence. I didn't let that stop me. My nickname was soggy but that is a long story.
  • I was with the 232nd Signal Company 1979-1980 and often hopped the South Gate for pizza and getting to town - obviously I was never shot. I believe that pizza place is now a Thai restaurant. I would also walk out the North gate and visit the NCO club for dinner on occasion. Other activities included nightly elbow warm-ups at the Rod & Gun Club and participating back stage with The Worms American Repertory Theatre (WART) - and one overnight stay with the MPs - self induced and a long tragic story of young love involving an English girl that broke my heart.

Also went to a bar called "The Point" by the train station. Remember the outdoor cafes on the Rhine and of course the Rod & Redneck. Great times!
  • I was there during that time. I was in the Document Control Center.
  • Do you remember the Marines that were there? We were famous...actually infamous. Just kidding. Best time I had during 4 years of active duty.

  • Ach Du Lieberschnitzel! I love those fine, decent Germans. All things considered, they treated us "Amis" pretty well. I went native, embraced the locals and their customs, and they opened their hearts to me. I'm kind of sorry I didn't marry and stay, because I know them as fine, cultivated Christian people.

  • Was stationed there '65 - '66 with 34th Trans Company of the 38th Trans Battalion of the 107 Trans Brigade but my company and battalion had to move to Panzer Kaserne to make room from CommZ moving in after Charles de Gaulle kicked them out of France. Loved Worms and disliked Panzer, too far from Boblingen and Stuttgart! Best, Dave E.
