The 4th Regiment Royal Artillery is a regiment of the Royal Artillery in the British Army. It currently serves in the armoured field artillery role, and is equipped with the AS-90 self-propelled howitser artillery piece (photo above). The Regiment moved here from Roberts Barracks in Osnabruck, Germany at the end of 2008 where it had previously been stationed for over 20 years. The Regiment's main recruiting area is in the North East of England, and so significant effort has been put into re-establishing links, especially to the city of Sunderland where the Regiment holds the Freedom of the City. These strong links to the local area gives the Regiment its name 'The North East Gunners.'

Within Alanbrooke Barracks there is a Spar shop/Post Office, coffee shop and Regimental Sports Bar, riding stables (tuition available), a golf course, fully equipped gym, and Thistle Hill Bike Track. Services on camp include the HIVE, Free Internet Facilities (in HIVE), Connexions (Via Thirsk Clock), mobile library, Church and youth clubs. The Community Development Worker is based on the Barracks and provides a variety of youth and community activities throughout the year. Scouts, Beavers, Cubs, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows as well as martial arts and dance classes are available locally in Topcliffe or Thirsk. Thirsk also has a swimming pool with sauna and gym.
