University Neighborhood High School is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It is housed in the former P.S. 31 School building which was Designed by architect C.B.J. Snyder, and built by the firm of Alfred Nugent & Son from 1902-1903. It is a classic example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style. The main entrance on Gouverneur Street features a doorway with a gothic arch and the Board of Education’s crest carved in intricate scrollwork above it. The school’s name is commemorated in scrollwork carved into the building’s stone exterior, as well as on the bronze plaque in the main entrance. Some former faculty include Frank McCourt who was the author of the books "Angela's Ashes" and "Teacher Man".

Established as a partnership between the New York City Department of Education and New York University, UNHS opened in September, 1999. Ms. Rosa Pietanza was the school’s founding principal and is still an advocate for its continued relationship with NYU. The school continues to serve the students of the Lower East Side community, preparing them for college and beyond.
