office building, commercial building
188-foot, 16-story office building completed in 1924. Designed by Springsteen & Goldhammer, it is clad in brown brick above a 2-story pink stone base. The front facade is organized into a wide middle section and two end bays. At the ground floor, both end bays have recessed entrances, with a service entrance at the west, and the main entrance at the east. There are paired windows joined by pink granite surrounds at the 2nd floor above the entrances, and the granite end bays have horizontal banding. The middle section is framed i polished pink granite, and divided by two rounded granite columns into three bays. The ground floor has storefronts under a wide, shallow arch with metal lettering spelling out "DIAMOND CENTER OF AMERICA". Behind the letters and above the arch, the top of the ground floor is filled by a field of red terra-cotta with a pattern of diamond shapes. The 2nd floor has tripartite windows, doubled in the center, with red metal framing.
At the upper floors, the end bays are set off by thin, vertical limestone bands, and there is a limestone band along the base of the 3rd floor, from which the slightly-projecting brick piers spring. These separate the middle section into seven single-windows, with light-green metal spandrels featuring patterns of fleur-de-lys, and rosettes at alternating spandrels and floors. The end bays have paired windows, with limestone surrounds and cornices at the 3rd floor, and stone sills at the other floors. The facade is dotted with protruding air-conditioning units.
The 7th floor is topped by a bracketed cornice, above which the end bays extend two more floors to a setback, and the middle section has angled side walls, each with one windows. The five remaining front-facing windows have stone sills and simple brick spandrels. The angled side walls and the outer of these five windows set back above the 8th floor. The setbacks at the end bays are marked by balustrades. At the 13th floor, there are two round-arched windows framed by columns at the now-narrow front, and long angled side walls receding back to the set-back portions of the facade, each with three round-arched windows. The entire floor is topped by a bracketed cornice. The floors above have square-headed windows, with a small setback above the 15th floor.
