First World War 1914-1918, aircraft hangar, historic ruins

The hangar was constructed sometime during World War I and was designed to house the 192' by 42' Type C airships. Ten were built by Goodyear-Goodrich, intended to patrol New York's harbor during WWI, but it is unknown if any were ever kept here due to the larger hangar and landing field available next door at Naval Air Station, Rockaway.

The hangar was later used to store steam locomotives until its razing after World War II.

This hangar has long been removed, but the concrete foundation (approx 60' x 150') and the steel rails which once guided the rollers of the large hangar doors are clearly visible today on the north side of Fort Tilden near Rockaway Beach Boulevard. This area is now used to store wood chips from cut down trees until they are used on the trails in the park.

A 1924 aerial view shows the hangar and a small support building amid a large field.
