Established in September 1930, this is the oldest primary school in Kuala Lumpur. The school has a strong historical and architectural significance. It was formerly known as Batu Road School (BRS) and was used as a primary school for Victoria Institution. It started with an initial enrolment of 600 boys. The first Headmaster was Mr. M. Wheatley, who administered the school from 1930 to 1939.
In World War II, during the Occupation, this school was converted to a Japanese Garrison. During that time, the field surrounding the school was used to grow vegetable, and the perimeter of the roof was tarred to enable easy movement of heavy artillery. The school's occupation ended when the Japanese surrendered, and the school reopened in September 1945. The school played temporary host to students from Victoria Institution, as their own school in Shaw Road (now Jalan Hang Tuah) was occupied by the British Military Administration. Today, part of the Batu Road School premises has been converted to the Batu Road Special Education Primary School, catering to children with special needs and visual impairment.
