Chow Kit (Kuala Lumpur)

Malaysia / Kuala Lumpur / Kuala Lumpur
 invisible, subdistrict, town district

Chow Kit is a sub-district in central Kuala Lumpur. It is named after Loke Chow Kit, a famous tin mine owner and industrialist in Kuala Lumpur. This was once a Malay area, but now days the area looks like it belongs to foreigners - Indonesians and Africans amongst others. While the buildings along the road are multi storied buildings and the area has an ethnic Chinese character.

It has a daily wet market known as Bazaar Baru Chow Kit which is arguably the largest wet market and a tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur. It also features a night market also known as Bundle Chow Kit along Lorong Haji Taib which is known for the sale of used clothings and accessories. Chow Kit is also known as the red-light district of Kuala Lumpur. Enforcement officials from the Islamic Affairs Department - notorious for swooping on nightclubs and motels in search of Muslims having extramarital sex - regularly descend on the streets of Chow Kit.

  • An attempt either through independent candidacy or NGO/Sex worker grouping to legalize adult service venues on selected streets may be made for non-Muslims to better protect sex workers.
