Bhatnagar's - Kothi Burj Mahal (Meerut)

India / Uttar Pradesh / Mirat / Meerut

Artitistically built house dating back to 1912. Located almost in the centre of Meerut city. Helps people locate many hospitals and clinics around

The Kothi Burj Mahal was built by Kripa Shankar Verma, in 1911 (the year of Coronation Durbar of King George V in India).

Shri Kripa Shankar Verma was then Executive Engineer in Public Works Department of the Government of the then United Provinces (one of the few Indians who could rise to the gazetted ranks of government service under the British). He was a civil engineering graduate of 1898 vintage from the Thomson College of Engineering.

The Thomson College was the first engineering college in the British Empire, set up in 1847 in Roorkee. The College was later known as the University of Roorkee and is now known as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee.

The United Provinces was rechristened as Uttar Pradesh post independence (1947).

Roorkee is located in the foothills of Himalays, 180 km north of New Delhi and around 120 km north of Meerut. Roorkee is now in the state of Uttaranchal, which was created in 2000.

Incidentally, Meerut (an important army garrison town) is the city where the fire of the first freedom struggle broke out 150 years ago in 1857 against the British East India Company. Today Meerut has a population of nearly 2 million.

  • Hi I wonder why all messages are now marked as 'abusive' ! I have uploaded a couple of more photos which are not appearing here on top but one can access those from Menu. Tanmaya
  • Dear Tannu, Good to see some more photos. I know additional photos come at the end but it is ok as you can view them anyhow. Generally, messages should be termed abusive if they are long. It seems anyone can term them abusive even by mistake by clicking on the abusive button. But it does not matter as you can see them anyway by clicking. Ved
  • Dear Mamaji, Yes I think there is some hitch about 'abusive' but it is not really that damaging.
