The Bank of America Plaza is a skyscraper located located in the SoNo district of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The 55-storey building has a height of 1,021 ft (312 m) and is the tallest building in Atlanta. It was constructed in 14 months from 1991-1992. It was originally named NationsBank Plaza until it was given its current name in 1998. Troutman Sanders, a law firm, has its headquarters in the building. It was designed in the Postmodern architectural style by Roche-Dinkeloo and was developed by Cousins Properties. The building has a floor area of 1,261,982 sq ft (117,242 sq m).
The building's imposing presence is highlighted by the dark colour of its exterior. It soars into the sky with vertical lines that reinforce the height while also creating an abundance of revenue-generating corner offices. Located on a 3.7-acre (1.5 ha) site, it faces its border streets at a 45-degree angle to maximise the views to the north and south. There is a 90-ft (27 m) obelisk-like spire at the top of the building echoing the shape of the building as a whole, which is covered by 23-karat gold leaf. The inhabited portion of the building actually ends with a flat roof. On top of this is built a pyramid of girders, which are gilded and blaze at night, with the same type of yellow-orange high-pressure sodium (HPS) lighting now used in most street lights.
The Bank of America Plaza is set back off Peachtree Street and West Peachtree Street by 45 metres. The setback is variously filled with driveways, entrances to the building's parking garage, potted plants, granite staircases, and sloping lawns.
