This area of Atlanta is known as SoNo, for South of North. The area used to be known as Bedford-Pine, for intersecting streets, but the name referenced Civil War general and KKK activist Nathan Bedford Forrest, and thus a new name was bestowed upon the area during a recent wayfinding campaign.

Sono is located in the gray area between Midtown and Downtown. Both districts claim most of this area, though Midtown and Downtown are traditionally considered to meet at North Avenue. Interstate 75/85 cuts off this portion of Downtown from the main central business district, and this is the area generally covered by the SoNo district.

The area contains Crawford Long Hospital, business and residential high rises, apartment complexes, and a large amount of surface parking/vacant land.
