The lead ship in her two-member Class of Amphibious Transport Docks (LPDs) in service with the Spanish Navy, SPS Galicia commissioned into service in April 1998 and is homeported here at Naval Station Rota.
Capable of carrying up to 600 fully equipped soldiers of the Infantería de Marina, the Galacia and her sistership SPS Castilla (L52) constitute 2/3 of the Spanish Navy's Amphibious Fleet. Part of NATO's Sea Forces, the ship also operates as part of the European Union's Spanish-Italian Amphibious Force (SIAF).
