U.S. Route 301/Virginia Route 2 (Hanover Courthouse Road)

U.S. Route 301 is a major north-south spur U.S. numbered highway on the east coast of the United States. It travels from Sarasota, Florida to Glasgow, Delaware. In Virginia it parallels I-95 from North Carolina to Richmond. It runs concurrently with US-1 from Petersburg to Richmond and with VA-2 from Richmond to Bowling Green. The road serves as an alternative to I-95 north of Richmond to avoid Washington D.C., but often experiences heavy congestion at the Harry Nice Bridge over the Potomac River into Maryland. It connects the Virginia cities of Emporia, Petersburg, Richmond, Bowling Green, and Dahlgren; but mostly serves as a local route south of Richmond.

Virginia Route 2 is a primary state route running 54 miles from Richmond to Fredericksburg. It runs concurrent with US-301 for over half us its route from Richmond to Bowling Green. It is a quieter alternative to the I-95/US-1 corridor, running no more than 10 miles to the east.
