The Shambles (York)

A very narrow Medieval street in York. It is the oldest recorded street in the city. Its name means 'The Slaughterhouses' and it was home to many butchers - back in the Middle Ages it would have been messy with animal remains and blood (that's why the word 'Shambles' can mean 'Total Disorder). The street is very narrow and is limited to pedestrians only. There are some small passages called Snickelways connecting it to the market.
