Interstate 279 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
Interstate 279 serves as the main access route between downtown Pittsburgh and its northern and western suburbs. It consists of the "Parkway North" and "Parkway West" segments, so named for their positions relative to downtown.
The Parkway North started as the East Street Valley Expressway in the 1960s. The right-of-way and land was purchased and cleared. The land then sat vacant for years as funding to construct the roadway was unvavailable. The roadway was finally constructed in the 1980's and is an important part of the western Pennsylvania transportation infrastructure.
