Interstate 40 (North Carolina)
Interstate 40 (I-40) is an east-west mainline interstate route from Barstow, California to Wilmington, North Carolina. It enters North Carolina from Tennessee between Waterville, NC and Hartford, TN. The route also passes through Asheville, Hickory, Statesville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Burlington, Chapel Hill/Durham, Raleigh, and Wilmington. The highway has mountain tunnels at two locations near the Tennessee state line. Crossing the entire state from the Smokey Mountains to the Atlantic Coast, this is one of the longest highways in the state and connects a majority of the largest cities in North Carolina.
