Interstate 77 (North Carolina)
Interstate 77 (I-77) is a north-south mainline interstate route from Columbia, South Carolina to Cleveland, Ohio. It crosses into North Carolina from South Carolina just south of Charlotte. It enters Virginia to the north in the vicinity of Mount Airy. The route also passes by Mooresville, Statesville, and Elkin. In the vicinity of Charlotte the route serves the nearby suburbs and experiences heavy commuter congestion. Further north, the route is much more rural however, accessing the western piedmont of North Carolina. For most of its route through the state, I-77 closely follows the older US Route 21.
