Interstate 64 (Virginia) (Newport News, Virginia)
Interstate 64 (I-64) is an east-west mainline interstate route from Wentzville, Missouri (west of Saint Louis) to Chesapeake, Virginia (in Hampton Roads). It enters Virginia from West Virginia west of Covington. It runs concurrently with I-81 from Lexington to Staunton. It then heads east via Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Richmond, and Williamsburg en route to the Hampton Roads area where it passes through Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach. It is a very busy route east of Richmond and plans to widen the road from Richmond to Hampton Roads are in various stages of proposal or development. Originally it was intended to follow the route of U.S. Highway 60. Instead, it was decided that it would follow US-250 and US-11 between Richmond and Lexington. Notable points on the road include the crossing of Hampton Roads on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, the High Rise Bridge (drawbridge over the Elizabeth River), and crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Rockfish Gap.
