NE 2 has two segments. The western segment is signed beginning at the South Dakota border, but doesn't go off on its own until about 55 miles later. From NE 71, NE 2 goes east to US 385 in Berea. After leaving US 385, it goes through Hyannis and Mullen, then meets US 83 near Thedford. From here it goes southeast passing through Broken Bow and into Grand Island. After leaving US 34 outside Grand Island, NE 2 runs south to Interstate 80 exit 318. Its eastern segment begins about 82 miles east in Lincoln from US 77.

NE 71 starts where NE 2 at the South Dakota border. It runs concurrent with NE 2 for 55 miles until it turns west while NE 2 goes east. NE 71 goes south through Scottsbluff and Kimball before crossing Interstate 80. It ends at the Colorado state border.
