U.S. Route 501 is a north-south spur U.S. numbered highway on the east coast of the United States. It runs from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Buena Vista, Virginia. In Virginia, it is not a particularly major route, but does connect Lynchburg with the Raleigh/Durham area and also serves as an important crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains (following the James River). It enters Virginia near the Mayo Reservoir south of Cluster Springs. It connects the towns of South Boston, Halifax, Brookneal, Rustburg, Lynchburg, Big Island, Glasgow, and Buena Vista. Much of the road is two lanes and passes through downtown areas; the only freeway segment is the old Lynchburg Expressway.
